Explorers of Navoria - Forgotten Lands - Beyond The Base Game

In the magical land of Navoria, new and strange continents have emerged from the sea. The council of Navoria has decreed that the new continents must be explored, and you and a handful of other intrepid adventurers have answered the call... the stage is set for the adventure of a lifetime in Explorers of Navoria!

In Explorers of Navoria, you'll take action tokens from the bag and use them to draft Adventure cards into your tableau.

Adventure cards help you explore Navoria, build settlements in the newly emerged continents, craft supplies and items, and collaborate with the different races of Navoria.

Some of the Adventure cards give instant benefits, boosting your powers; some give ongoing abilities, engine-building in your tableau; and all of them increase your reputation with different races of Navoria, unlocking end-game bonuses through set-collection.

After drafting Adventure cards, you'll use the same tokens you drafted from the bag to visit locations on the mainland of Navoria in a worker placement phase. Worker placement locations reduce in power after each token is placed so you'll want to visit each location first to get the best benefits!

I like this expansion. It adds some meat to what is a fun but very light game without it. Just a note about the two faction tiles you singled out: The one that gives you an extra point for the faction bonus is an extra point per card (so four points per Yellow card instead of three for example). That can add up fast and makes you really go for those bonuses. The tie breaker one is also surprisingly powerful. In our games (two player) ties came up a lot on the tracks so denying those bonuses to the other player can be something real. Thanks for the review.

Forgotten Lands came about as a stretch goal for the crowdfund, so being released at the same time on retail makes sense. But they do also clearly refer to them as elements and not modules (i.e. parts to the expansion rather than things that are interchangeable)

I do really like the base game (and only played one game with the expansion so far); but as much as it irritated me it does "play best with three". Dropping down to "drafting" 3 cards per round for a 4 or 5 player game, does irk me a little as I'm sure they could have balanced adding more cards.

My biggest criticism of the game though is in the rulebook for the base game ... would it really have hurt to put the card descriptions in the same order as the top to bottom on the board?

But overall? Absolutely a great shorter worker placement game.

I enjoyed it but felt like it could have all been in the base box originally - the contents did not merit a separate expansion IMO.

I don't think I have ever had a curious look at a game that has been out for less than 6 months and thought "How great" when I find out there's already an expansion for it.. 🙂

Fix thumbnail. “Exploers” isn’t right. Someone might think it’s “Exploders.” 🤣
