I taught myself to crochet (from books: this was pre-video, pre-dvd, pre-Internet) when I was around 14, then did the same for knitting several years later. I still prefer crochet, but it’s nice to have both skills (especially when you come across yarns that are difficult to crochet with—like superfuzzy ones—that can be used to knit. I made an afghan last year and had to switch it from crochet to knitting once I hit a section of yarn that was impossible to see!)
