The Democratic-led effort to hear new testimony in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial is all-but certain to fail after GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander announced late Thursday night that he’ll vote against a motion calling for witnesses.

Alexander was one four Republican senators who could have joined Democrats to subpoena new witnesses, including former national security adviser John Bolton. Alexander’s decision paves the way for the Senate to acquit Trump as soon as Friday evening.

Life long Democrat here. This case from a legal standpoint was a complete disaster. House completely dropped the ball and made a mockery of this while process. Very disappointed in house Democrats right now.
