This is a huge issue where I live. The police will park on he side of the road and use the plate readers mounted on the car to scan everyone who drives in and out of the public housing neighborhood, KNOWING that the reason people have lapses in insurance or unpaid parking tickets is poverty…the police see it as a cash cow, but these people can’t pay, so they wind up in jail and unable to get to work, thus ruining any hope of climbing out of poverty. They’re literally RUINING FAMILIES, it’s not just a “bad look”.

Most states have computer software and cameras that read every license plate the camera sees. I think this, like drug searches with K-9s are a breach of our 4th amendment.

In Philly the police cars have license plate readers in the front of their car so they don't have to type the plates in anymore!

My brother was pulled over, allegedly for a sun bleached plate. He actually shook his head at a Deputy who wouldn’t go through a four way stop sign when it was his turn. After waiting an inordinate amount of time, my brother drove through the intersection shaking his head at the deputy, who immediately pulled him over.
The first thing the deputy asked my brother was, “Why did you shake your head at me?” 😂
My brother told him that he can’t pull someone over for shaking their head at you. The deputy told him that wasn’t the reason he was pulled over. He stated that he pulled him over because the paint was pealing off his license plate.
My brother told him that he was responsible for everything on his truck, EXCEPT for the plate, which was issued to him by the state and therefore the states responsibility. The deputy let him go.
My brother immediately drove to the Sheriff’s department to file a complaint, they threatened to arrest him if he didn’t leave. No complaint was filed. This is in Tucson, Az. The lesson?
Do not shake your head at a ruler.

In Arizona cops have automatic license plate readers that can read 6000 plates per hour. With Amber alerts, blue alerts, silver alerts ALPR cut down the time required to locate someone in danger.

Isn't it incredible how we have the right to travel, we have the right to be private in our identity, yet police and the government can force us to put identification on the outside of our vehicles so that you can run our plates anytime you want to.

Did horses and buggies have to have license plates and registration back in the day? No...

It looks to me that major part of the existence of licence plates is for law enforcers to check it, without necessarily bothering the citizens. It is amazing to me that some people find this troubling.
