Defence Minister Richard Marles meets with Chinese counterpart

Defence Minister Richard Marles has held a face-to-face discussion with his Chinese counterpart General Wei Fenghe in Cambodia on Tuesday, local time, ahead of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting Retreat.

This meeting comes less than six months after the last time the pair talked.

China hasn't changed direction it has merely changed its approach to foreign diplomacy because it realizes that it cannot gain the trust of the Pacific Islands while it is in dispute with Australia. This dispute makes the Pacific nations wary of its intentions and so limits its capacity to obtain military bases in the region.

The question that is deeply concerning for Australia is, why does China want bases in this region?
