You can send APRS messages to/from cell (mobile) phones via SMS. This is great for keeping in touch when you're out of phone coverage - but still might have an APRS digipeater around to relay a message - especially useful in emergency situations too!

APRS is probably my most favorite mode in amateur radio. It's so versatile in that you can connect all sort of devices and digital information along with the APRS message.

Here in my area of the USA. I use a old Android phone running the APRSdroid app. A Baofeng UV5R and a amazon APRS audio cable.

A problem I find sometimes is that many digipeaters are RX only. If that's the case where you are you'll never get a message back. I set my digipeater up to be bidirectional. Otherwise APRS just turns into a tracking system. That's not as much fun I think...

Hi Hayden, great video; it’s very cool we can use APRS here in VK land. I’ve just started looking for a good dual band radio I can take with me in the car as I travel most places with repeater coverage. This is very cool to know we use these tools as Sat Phone are proving to be unreliable.

I had similar issue receiving SMS on my radio. I found that you need to send out a normal APRS beacon first so the network knows where to find you.

I did a test and subscribed my number in the Australian format and it said you are opted in... Then I tried to opt out with the same copied text format and it says invalid format... any idea why this would do that?

So the only way to text other cell phones is for the other user to be opted in for the aprs sms service.
