He never actually did call himself THE special one. Yes, it matters.. Just look at the title of the video. The British media made too much of it but I'm thankful it didn't shake him & that he proved himself after the interview.

When you think about it, José Mourinho won the Champions League with Porto & Inter Milan, has also won every possible European club trophy as well as every League title he has managed in, he is indeed “SPECIAL”!

Another example of how good he’s been is that with a Man United team poorer than the current one in terms of player quality, in the season 2016/17 they won the Europa League, and then finished runners up in the Premier League to Man City in the following season, which is easily United’s best record since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
