Nekomata is a cat that has become immortal and became a youkai, gaining an extra tail after 100 years. The origin of this came from people observing that relatively wild cats tend to have untidy fur that seem to split at the end of their tails, so they thought that these cats are starting to split and grow into 2 tails. And they imagined the process will take 100 years and created the Nekomata myth. Nekomata itself means "Cat Twice/Again", Cat with 2 tails.

Nekomata can also shape shift into human form, but they can't transform their tails away which is why Kirara has human ears and is actually wearing fake cat ears. Since they literally had object youkai transform into human form in a previous event, they are diving even deeper into youkai lore.

It's said that cats are not allowed at ancient Japanese funerals because they believe if a cat is a nekomata, they can jump over a dead person's body and they will come back to life, probably as a zombie so people are scared of it.
