Um, this absolutely *is* a part of the main Donkey Kong series. You may be thinking of the Donkey Kong *Country* series, which is a spin-off of the main Donkey Kong series.

One bit of clarification for context: While the true breadth of the game could be a surprise to players who come across it in the NSO app and don't initially know, the buyers of 1994 were well aware of it. Advertising not only showed shots/footage of the new stages, but the Japanese commercial and even the back of the game box clearly mentioned 100 levels.

Does it hold up?

Yes, it does. I remember playing Donkey Kong '94 when I was a kid. Although I didn't realize it at the time, it truly is one of the greatest Game Boy games ever made. Period. Having the ability to play it again on Nintendo Switch Online, I am able to understand the depth of the puzzles and game mechanics. Having the ability to use save states from any point in the game and rewind after making a mistake is icing on the cake.

DK94 spawned an entire series of spinoffs that progressively proved Nintendo had no idea what made this game good, each diverting further and further away from the point.

This is the first and best Mario VS DK game.

DK94 was my first 3DS virtual console game. I got it as a free Club Nintendo reward. It is, still to this day, the greatest puzzle platformer I have ever played and holds a worthy spot in my top 10 personal favorite video games of all time. If you haven't played this game before, I implore you to.

THIS game gave us acrobatic triple jump Mario. THIS game inspired Mario Vs Donkey Kong. THIS game has incredible music. We owe so much to this game and it was under appreciated for too long. I remember getting it on release, not knowing what to expect, being blown away, and NOBODY talking about it.

Many year back, when going through countless gameboy roms, I remember playing this for the first time assuming it was just a donkey kong port. I had played a bit on donkey kong on nes as a kid and that was all I was expecting. It was great the way this subverted and surpassed my expectations.

Donkey Kong 94 is one of my favorite games on the Gameboy. I still play it on the Super Gameboy on my SNES, but it is a shame that we never got Super Gameboy support on NSO considering a few games on there support it, such as MegaMan V, Kirby's Dreamland 2, Donkey King Land 1, 2, and 3, and Castlevania Legends.
