Fiat currency is the only sensible concept of currency. You can't back the trillions of dollars that operate in the world today with any 'intrinsically valuable' good, as gold was once able to do. We operate on trust today, and that's fine because people are incredibly productive, and technology aiding that production based in the US and its natural resources means the dollar will be strong so long as it isn't mismanaged by incompetence of government (& yeah, that is a legitimate worry).
