I like that Fern shares the same emotionless face as Frieren. It's a nice little detail that shows just how far she has come since being taught everything she knows.

That soulless look she gives is really a reflection of frieren, it’s such a subtle yet beautiful moment. Fern is really embracing all she has been taught.

At this point, if I see a SINGLE frame of emotion on Fern's face during a battle, I'll know she's cooked.

The feeling of wrongness comes from the fact that no matter how much magic Fern uses, her mana signature does not change.

The more I watch this the more I see all the mana Ehre is wasting. Flying, levitating her rocks, not aiming the rock directly towards Fern, and using a big area attack when not necessary. Fern blocks when rocks are coming towards her, she's on the ground, she use less spells, and she aim at Ehre from different angles at a time.

I fear not the mage who has practiced 10, 000 different spells once, but I fear the mage who has practiced one basic spell 10, 000 times.
-Fern probably

I think another great note that people overlook when talking about the waste of mana, is that nearly every mage ran out of mana during this test. Denkens team, 2 of lugels team, even the two girls on freirens team all ran out of mana. Meanwhile fern not only hid her mana well but fought with so little waste she couldve easily fought another team if she had to.

Fern doesn't actually reveal the real lesson of using basic spells in combat. It's not just that it's enough to defeat mages of the era, but it's more intelligent and useful battle strategy. Simple spells means that she's reserving Mana, and she's able to overwhelm them with multiple straightforward attacks. She's not bogged down by large area effects and can defend against multiple foes, as well as attack more than just a single combatant because she's not spent after the battle.

"you only use basic attack and defense magic then?"
"well i can see through clothes too"

Fern's mastery at magical combat makes sense, considering that she was trained by one of the most powerful elven mages ever, and also received tons of combat experience in their fight against demons. The fact that she resorts in using basic spells against Ehre tells just how powerful she is.

Also, she and Stark make for a great duo in combat. One specializes in close combat, while the other excels at ranged combat, thus completing each others' fighting styles.

Imagine this.
You're in a fire fight with someone. You'd think sooner or later your opponent would run out of bullets.
But as you wait, the amount of bullets keep increasing instead of decreasing.

"I was taught to only use basic spells in combat. She said it's enough to defeat mages of this era." is such a raw and berating line it's insane lol

She's basically saying that "There's not even a mage alive worthy of using stronger or more advanced spells than this against"

Fern is the embodiment of "So anyway, I started blasting"

0:20 It took me until today to connect the dots and figure out that she's comparing fighting Fern to fighting Lernen - the genius mage who created the golems from the second trial, and sure enough - when he tried to challenge Frieren, he shot her with an ordinary attack.

I like how the feeling of her line "It's like a canon." changes when you realize how easily she's blocking everything.

It's not a statement about how powerful and dangerous the attack is, but instead a simple observation about the nature of her magic.

Fern was 16 when she and Frieren left Eisen's home and said she spent half her life with Frieren. She spent 8 years with a person whos lived over 1000 years. The experience and knowledge to pull from by your side practically 99.9% of the day. She's older by now but doing something consistently for 8+ years, the level of mastery a person can have at their craft can be scary sometimes.

"It feels like I'm fighting my grandfather".

Originally thought that was shade, but now feels like begrudging respect if not early realization she was cooked.

Mage equivalent of 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and 10km running every single day

I would like to point out that Fern is not even wasting mana on a flight spell here, since aiming her own laser beams don't seem dependant on the high ground and whatever else. Efficiency first.

I'll never get flying as a way for mages to fight.
It's why I love this anime. Why would you give yourself that many openings, expose your massive blondspot.
Fern knows that all she has to do is be a turtle. With the ground at her feet she has her flank covered. All she has to do is look up.
But the flying let's her attack from every single angle.
