While everyone's busy arguing over whether the new film adaptation of the stage musical Mean Girls is a remake or not, I've got my own bones to pick with the films aesthetic.

The movie even felt like a parody of the stage musical. The social divisions are more apparent on stage and all of the stage actors knew how to sing…..

It should have been a reboot sequal where it takes to place in the same high school but a different set of characters.

I personally never cared for the original Mean Girls… BUT when I heard it was going to be a musical I got so excited! (And am still excited and plan on seeing it). It looks really fun but I will say my only problem is like what you said, it feels cheap but it feels that way because the way certain camera angles are shot. It doesn’t feel cinematic (which is probably do to the fact it wasn’t supposed to be a theatrical film and it was supposed to be for Paramount Plus), and I do agree, the costuming for them could have been better to make them stand out more. But other than that I’m excited and ready to see how they tackle modern culture and society standards.

Honestly Matilda the musical was much much better. I was super excited when i found out that Mean Girls will be a musical movie 🎥 my brain was like : oh boy!!!! Is gonna be like Matilda!!! And nope 👎 sorry 😞

Al ot of the older cast did come from SNL so for this new one to feel even more a kin to those kinds of skits is funny since there's even less of them in the cast now

Regina looks cheap in this one. She just doesn't pull that energy of her being an it girl. She just looks like everyone else lol.

I think the plastics looking more like everyone was deliberate, in highschool kids that are idealized are often not really any better than other kids. Bullying is often done by people who themselves aren’t all that attractive. If you keep the plastics looking that much better than the other kids you’re kind of agreeing with the idea that popular kids are better than less popular kids when it usually isn’t that way.

I loved the music in the montages that used to feel weird with just noises in the original, the removal of the racism and sex offenses in the original and the more diverse cast with no cringey Indians.

The Mean Girls musical on Broadway isn’t even that good. I love the original MG movie, but the musical is just lacking so much. The songs just fall flat. Unlike some other shows similar to it like Heathers. The 80s movie Heathers walked so that the MG movie could run. But Heathers the musical is infinitely better than MG on bway. Like quite simply just the music. MG has the storyline to be epic but the music flopped and was only on anyone’s radar really bc of the popularity of the original movie. Then when they did the movie version of the musical they cut a substantial chunk out of it and leaves everything flat. It could’ve been so much more and it really comes down to the writing and composing. The actors did great with what they had to work with.

This was the best review I’ve seen yet!! I was so disappointed in theaters. I literally walked out mad at what they’ve done to mean girls. I was not expecting it to be even nearly as good as the original but I was at least hoping to have a good time and be filled with nostalgia. The opposite happened. It didn’t even feel like mean girls anymore :(
