Wow! Another MDZS animatic? crAaAzy

This has been in the works since last year’s December but things just kept getting in the way and in the end I had to do most of it during my summer break (hahahahah)

This animatic takes place before Jiang cheng and Wei Wuxian had their fight : )) Song is from the Prince of Egypt musical

I hope you enjoy : ) I find Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian’s brotherly bond very tragic, and the fact that they never truly reconciled in the book makes me even sadder.

What’s MDZS?
MoDaoZuShi, or The grandmaster of demonic cultivation is a Chinese BL Webnovel. Wei Wuxian, a demonic cultivator feared and hated by millions was killed 13 years prior to the main story and summoned back to life due to mysterious reasons!

This animatic portrays the rocky relationship between him and his brother.

There are english translations online and different adaptations of it including a Donghua, comic, and live action drama. It’s definitely worth a read :D

How did you make this?
I used a combination of Clip studio paint and After affects for this animatic. Before that I made a rough draft of it in Storyboard Pro (which I will post soon : ) )

Is this accurate to the book?
Hmmmm! No!! I definitely designed the cave to be a lot more dramatic than it probably is in the book but well…I want to make this animatic as dramatic as possible

Wasn’t the sword sealed?
It indeed is…but Jiang Cheng doesn’t know this and assumed that Wei Wuxian’s sword isn’t sealed (meaning he thought Wei Wuxian can still unsheathe it himself) because Wei Wuxian is still alive isn’t he? : ))))

The fact that WWX looks like he's getting into it, then the minute JC goes "like this never happened" his honest smile drops. JC wants to save JUST WWX, but WWX isn't willing to let the Wens all die... When he realizes JC isn't going to help save them, help do the right thing, he knows he can't take this offer

I think people sometimes forget that jc was desperate in trying to save wwx too and frankly I think you encaptured the desperation that jc was feeling while also encapturing the regret that wwx feels when he pushes jc away bcz he cant/refuses to tell jc why hes pushing him away once more

When JC offered out Suibian it was so heartbreaking, he was offering something that WWX could never have and he didn't even know it. And I love the little microexpression WWX does when JC says 'like this never happened' because he does want to join him, however forgetting this goes against all his values and he can't do that either. In the end, he doesn't want to hurt JC, but he has to because he wants to keep the core exchange a secret and he can't leave without revealing it so instead he makes it seem like he made the choice when really, the choice had been made for him as soon as he gave his core to JC. In the end, it leaves painful confusion and misunderstanding because of half truths and lies that WWX never thought would lead up to it ending up like this.

Thank you for Some Fucking Nuance in this fandom! The relationship between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian is so complicated and tragic, and I think you captured it beautifully. Jiang Cheng loves his brother. They have very different moral compasses (Jiang Cheng prioritises the people close to him, willing to let other people suffer if it means what little is left of his family is safe, which makes a lot of sense when you consider he watched most of his family slaughtered), while Wei Wuxian cares about people in the more universal, traditionally heroic sense of the word. He can’t abandon a group of innocents to be hurt. He won’t. Neither of them is evil, both are looking at it from different vantage points.

The love is there. The love and the care are there, but they aren’t enough to change the outcome.

JC is the type of person who would do everything for the people he loves while WX is the type who will always does what he thinks is right. I think that JC really wanted to help his brother, but his duty to the rest of his people- what remained of them- is also holding him back.

I think one of the reason JC resent WWX so much is because he can't save him, he can't save his brother, the only family he had left at the time, when WWX turned away from him and the whole world, he couldn't do anything about it. he hated his brother for not staying by him like he had promised.

I keep coming back to this to rewatch it. I love how Wei Wuxian’s demeanor changes when Jiang Cheng insinuates that what WW can be absolved by ignoring what he did.

I'm still really frustrated that Jiang Cheng never forgives Wei WuXian even after the revelation of the sacrifice WWX has done for him, and now, it's his turn to keep the secret of his own sacrifice. It broke my heart that such a beautiful relationship between the brothers was shred to pieces without letting them talk calmy about it and... yeah, just trying to rebuild something. I agree with those who tell that it could never be like before because they lost a lot and it was really painful for both of them! However, I'm still believe that the chance to rebuild something new from what they already have is possible.
In this animation, you showed how much pain they had, how much they cared for each other, and the difficulty of their choices. Jiang Cheng could not afford to take the Wen under his protection because his sect wasn't strong enough at the moment to ensure safety - even though it would have been the greatest solution, the sect could have been one of the most powerful and nobody would have been hurt the way it did - but he was too young and his insecurity toward his position and the gossip maked everything worse. If only he wasn't always put after Wei WuXian, and they could have expressed themselves better...
WWX knew perfectly well the consequences of his desire to save the Wen. This is the reason why he decided to quit the sect, BUT one more time, he should have explained it to his brother...
Both of them made mistakes that led them to lose everything.

Jiang Cheng caught me off guard when he was about to strike Wen Ning, BUT THANKFULLY WEI WUXIAN BUTT IN. I love how the focus is on the Yunmeng Prides, and the lyrics fit with each of them. Beautiful animatic, as always !
