GESE Grade 5 = B1 test

10 minute speaking and listening test
Taken either at an approved Trinity SELT centre or by home-based assessment (limited availability)
Provisional result emailed by 9am the day after the test
Certificate usually sent within 7 days
Speaking & Listening only

If you take your exam in a centre it will take place on a Trinity tablet device which will be set up by your personal steward at a UKVI approved Trinity SELT centre.

The exam is 10 minutes long. There are two parts:

Topic: You choose a topic to prepare in advance of the test, for discussion with the examiner.
You must complete a Topic Form in advance and bring it with you to the exam.
Here is an example of a completed Topic Form.
Conversation: You have a short conversation with the examiner about two subject areas chosen by the examiner.
You also need to take a ‘Life in the UK’ Test as part of your application. This is not a Trinity test. Visit the government Home Office website for more information about the Life In The UK

What do CEFR, SELT and GESE mean?

CEFR = Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
SELT = Secure English Language Test
GESE = Graded Examinations in Spoken English

Your B1 test result and certificate
Your provisional result will be emailed to you by 9am the day after your test.
You will receive an email with your final result within 4-7 days of your test date.
If you have passed, you can then use your UER number to proceed with your UKVI application.
A provisional result is an unconfirmed result until approved by Trinity and confirmed as the final result.

Candidates in the UK can usually expect to receive their Trinity SELT certificate within 7 days of the test date.
Examiners assess your performance using an A-D rating scale. They award a letter grade (A, B, C or D) for each exam task. They use performance band descriptors to decide what grade to award.
There are four possible results for any GESE exam: Pass with Distinction, Pass with Merit, Pass and Fail. Your overall result is based on the grades you got in the different tasks
