A little bit about Paul Ekman, and the theories of what emotions are and why we have them. Paul Ekman dedicated his life to studying emotions. He found 5 core emotions in his first study and then went on to research further core emotions. Ekman believed that within all humans are the same set of emotions that are universal and display core needs.

From a background of electronic engineering and psychology, it seems to me that emotions are like indicator lights on your car dashboard... they are in essence telling you that there is a conflict between present bodily motion and suppression of alternative motion instructions... two or more different motion programs are running and all but one are being suppressed. A grinding of gears if you will... like trying to start an already running car... Different emotions indicate different forms of conflicting instructions.
