From their second album Toulouse Street. This song remains a concert staple and is one of The Doobie Brothers' biggest hits. The song peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1972. Its commercial success helped the album Toulouse Street skyrocket on the charts. The song remains a staple of adult contemporary and classic rock radio. It was written and sung by guitarist and vocalist Tom Johnston. Patrick Simmons, the second guitarist and vocalist in the group, sings the bridge of the song.

For those wondering, the musicians are lead vocalists-guitarists Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston, bassist-backing vocalist Tiran Porter, drummer-percussionist John Hartman, drummer Michael Hossack, and pianist-organist Bill Payne.

I always loved the extra choruses after the watery sounding breakdown section that are sadly cut from the single version. I also really like the extended outro with the guitar licks at the end. This version hasn’t been remastered on CD and isn’t even found on the complete albums collection Warner put out. Shame.

Whoever disliked this can be happy with the shameful 45 edit for all I care.

Only reason I came to listen to the Doobie Brothers..is today is Tom Johnston's birthday. He's 70 years old this year!!! Yikes!!!

From what I understand, the guys were sitting around trying to come up with names for the band. After a few ideas were tossed around, a friend of the band said, "well, you guys are always smoking pot, why not call yourselves the Doobie Brothers?" Needles to say the name stuck.

Breakbeats.
