I went with the GLI in ‘21. Firstly - what a bargain. When I purchased the car it was during the time in the pandemic when people weren’t driving. The car lots were so packed you couldn’t walk between the rows here in Santa Monica. I got the pure grey Autobahn 6MT new - they had to order it from Mexico 😊 - but it came in plastic wrapped with less than 5 miles. $29k OTD. I didn’t know how to drive a manual and had to learn in the DMV parking lot. As a ‘dad’ - I’m 50 without kids but have nephews / it’s the perfect car. It’s unassuming - has everything you need, nothing you don’t! In response to styling - the car is so good inside u don’t care how it looks outside. A luxurious, spacious 😊6MT with great handling (especially in mountain twisties). It’s more than two years later and I’m still having fun.

I am owning a 2023 GLI for 3 weeks now and I confirm, the stock tires are bad. Get real ones and this car is a marvel.

In my opinion this is the ultimate dad car with the Civic Si. If you want more engagement, get the Civic Si or Elantra N, if you want a cruiser/road tripper with some pep, get the GLI. The GLI has all the bare bones of an honest-to-goodness fwd sport sedan, with an unfortunately bare bones yet practical interior to match. Option for a DCT also separates it from Si. At the stage I'm at, I'd probably spring for the Audi S3 if I could afford it, but part of being a dad is making sacrifices for things that are more important like family. A perfectly adequate car with a kick of performance at a fair price point. Great review & good job VW.

I went with an Elantra N and I gotta admit, there are times when I'm on a long drive, that I wish I got a more comfortable car like the GLI.

I had an 06 gli 6mt for 10 years. Boy did I love that car, no issues at all, comfortable, I did wish it had an lsd. Maybe I'll pick this one up

At its price, you just get so much more compared to the Golf GTi and even the Golf R, and the interior is just better due to the physical buttons for climate control. Slap a small ECU tune on it for $600 and it produces the same power as the Golf R, the ea888 engine is one of the best VW makes. Only thing I can see this competing with would be the Toyota Camry, which is touch competition at the higher end of its segment, the 3.5L V6 makes 300hp stock and it might even have more space in the back, but it is more expensive than the GLI. For its price, nothing beats the GLI on features
