The whole "you can only build on top of Windows" and "you can change anything in Linux" thing perfectly displays the difference between the two. With Windows, Microsoft just kept building on top of legacy code and they never did a full rewrite, and they never designed Windows NT to be anything but a GUI OS in a way they've seen it, but that led to a certain standard being established which is why something like AutoHotkey can exist.

Linux is a CLI OS at heart that just so happens to be able to do GUI work because anything can be tacked on top of it, which gives immense freedom as to how you want to build your OS, but it also leads to it being an unstandardized chaos. The X11 vs Wayland debacle comes to mind. This is something as simple as rendering windows, but it's a divisive problem in the community. On Windows you just have DWM, it does the job and that's about it.

Both of these approaches have their own benefits and drawbacks, and none of them is superior. They both serve different purposes for different use cases.

Hi Chris, would you be interested in taking another look at komorebi and doing a beginning of 2024 / end of 2024 comparison of the project? Would be happy to also do a live collab video where you can shoot all of the "why is this like this??" questions at me in real time

I have gone through a couple of rounds trying to daily drive Komorebi, not because it wasn't working and I didn't enjoy it but just because I couldn't figure out how to configure it properly. I am currently giving it another shot and having more success and it feels so nice finally having a tiling workflow on Windows. I am a huge fan of the project and hope it continues to be developed. I think its worth giving a shot for anyone who feels comfortable with the configuration process.

komorebi: appears, acquires my interest, but I'm to lazy to install Windows back on any of my machines to try...
CT: just does the thing! So I can peacefully sit on my Arch with hyperland further...
Thanks for the review, you're the only person I can trust about Windows shenanigans.

I use an AHK script to run NirCmd on startup to disable the taskbar completely, then I have a few different Rainmeter skins in my collection that can act as customizable "taskbar replacements" (I just use Win+Tab or Alt+Tab to cycle between open windows). Pair that with PowerToys Run and you have a clean distraction-free setup far from the default Windows experience.

OpenSuse is the only distro that can handle all my hardware. I have the latest and greatest hardware. Including audio DAC and 3 x 4k Monitor. One monitor need to be "portrait" And flipped. I did try 10+ top distros. Only opensuse fit my needs. Very solid distro and detect every hardware and work well in virtual environment as well. (hyper-V) and v, ware workstation. I will add that my dealy driver is windows server as workstation, 2nd is opensuse

6:14 About long paths, I was reading the source code of a script, and the other was a code that was checking if the path was a long path or a normal path and based on that if was doing some things. So, if that's the case I think changing it to a long path by default would be a breaking change.

“The greatest thing since canned beer..”
Such an amazing bit of meta-commentary there.
Thank you for this analysis. I’ve been learning about tiling window managers and thinking it would greatly increase my productivity, but I’m stuck on Windows because of work. Looking for a solution and this looks like it can help, even if its’s more of a Coors Light solution.

You should do a video(s) on Windows DMs and status bars.

How did you get Powershell to load in only 600ms? It's takes over a second on my 5800X. Compare to konsole with fish on Linux in about 100ms.

@TitusTechTalk I didn't expect long file path would be in telemetry... is there some where else it can be grouped under and update the tool tips there?

Seelen UI has a pretty good tiling window manager along with a different desktop environment .

One of the reasons I like Linux is because of how much simpler it is to install packages and how good XMonad is.

I used to run some Japanese tiler along with the LiteStep shell most of the alternative Windows shells and window managers died during the transition to 64bit.
I remember asking about it on the LiteStep and BlackBox mailing lists/forums about the time XP x64 came out.
Basically, everyone was waiting for everyone else to start working on the wow64 crap. In the end it all started way too late most just gave up or switched to Linux.

The main reason to not enable long path in windows is because a lot of apps are designed and only work with this path limit. This fix only affects explorer. Sure, you can now create a 500 character path, but excel will fail after 218 no matter what.
Windows does not enable this by default, because it thinks allowing users to create/move files with explorer that wont work if opened is a bad idea. And I agree, non technical users should not have it enabled, particularly because non technical users are constantly using excel and similar programs that will probably poop the bed if they try to use paths longer than 200.
Even for technical users, I dont really care. no sane directory structure I have ever seen uses anywhere near 255.
