Women Empowerment and Achieving Gender Equality

The flapper movement is one of the most iconic aspects of the Roaring Twenties. The movement represented a burgeoning sense of freedom and equality for women among changing societal norms. One hundred years have passed, and women are still working toward those goals. Women still deal with sexual harassment, lower pay, and less representative leadership. Some argue that these issues are especially prevalent in Japan due to societal expectations that stem from traditional gender roles.
What can be done to progress the women’s movement? What role does Japan have to play? Panelists discuss women’s empowerment in Japan compared to other parts of the world and suggest what we can do to craft a Grand Design for another Roaring Twenties.
