Did you know that the nation of Niue released a one dollar commemorative coin with Meowth on it. In the anime episode Go West, Young Meowth, it’s stated that Team Rocket’s Meowth had to practice and learn how to stand on his hind legs like a human, but almost all sprites in the games and the Pokedex show Meowths standing on two legs. Meowth is the first Pokemon in the anime to talk. Meowth is also the only known Pokemon to have more than one regional form.

Also, the golden coin on meowth's head is actually a "koban" (a Japanese golden oval coin used as a lucky charm)!

According to Pokemon series creator Satoshi Tajiri, the coin and its use in Meowth's character design are based on a Japanese story about a cat who doesn't know there's a coin on its head, and thusly can't appreciate the value it holds.

Were the original sprites sitting? I’d assume they were all changed to standing to coincide with the most iconic Meowth, which created a retcon or continuity error in the long run. Not a bad decision in my opinion tho.
