He actually wasn't hitting on her, as we learn later this season, he is actually processing Carol's pregnancy at this point. It's also a nice mirror image of how their Kelvin timeline versions meet, where Kirk is actually hitting on her and directionless, while Uhura is sure of herself; here, she's insecure (though not quite directionless) and he is more secure. I didn't think he was a good choice at first, but Paul Wesley's Kirk is really growing on me, and I like that he actually behaves like a younger version of Shatner's Kirk: compassionate, calm, balanced. Young Kirk was described in TOS almost like a book worm. He was always class best student, not the rebel. I buy Paul Wesley's Kirk as that character. Chris Pine's Kirk was (intentionally) completely different.

I liked the chess talk from Kirk, it’s a great nod to his origin as a massive geek even if it is lesser known side of him.

I love the idea that Kirk is a lady’s man / space cowboy on the outside, but really on the inside, he’s just seeking to fulfill a desire to help everyone, as a means to fill a void left by his father, as a child. Then, as he matures into the Kirk we know later on, from TOS and the movies, he’s found a way to become more whole, while continuing to good.

I was thinking “SNW probably doesn’t want to be too risky, so they’re only showing non-prime Kirk”
Then I see this episode where they add the freaking first time with Kirk, Spock, and Uhura right on screen
