Wondering how to beat applicant tracking systems in 2023?

It may seem like a black box of information, but applicant tracking systems (ATS for short) are less complex than they seem. For the most part, they’re really simple versions of your favorite search engine - without all the money and resources behind them. The good news is that makes it even easier for you to build an applicant tracking system resume which puts you at the top of the candidate list.

Before your resume makes it to a human, it has to pass through the applicant tracking system software. This resume scanning software determines which resumes make it to the desk of the hiring manager and which ones are rejected.

Watch this week’s video to learn how to write an applicant tracking system resume to beat the hiring software. You’ll learn resume tips to help you write the best ATS resume, and learn how to beat the applicant tracking system.

What an absurd system. The amount of human life wasted tailoring resumes and cover letters to specific jobs only for them to never be read is absolutely staggering. It's got to be in the millions of years at this point when you consider it's a global problem. Regardless, thanks for the video.

1. customize your resume to each job
2. use the same words that are in the job description
3. show how you used skills under each job
4. use standard section names
5. ats is only the first step

ATS is one of the worst dystopias of the modern world.
This is not a job a stupid bot should be doing, HR and recruiters are just looking for more ways to not do their jobs.

whats crazy is that you have to apply to 100+ jobs to get a few call backs. so you are saying we have to customize over 100+ resumes to 100+jobs descriptions and that is crazy

ATS is another example of our society devaluing creativity. And also dependency on ai.

Ima be honest. I lie on my resume. Every job I have ever gotten outside my first job, I've lied on the past experience to make it fit something similar to the job im applying for. I feel like I can do any job wither I got experience or not but i know they not gonna even look my way if I don't have experience so i lie. And guess what, I usually always catching on the new job doing it without a problem. TIP: I never lie about the place of employment. Only the job title

I guess Recruiters and hiring managers are too LAZY to do their job nowadays! it's been a nightmare for me to beat the freaking Bot despite the years of experience I have in the defense industry...

So you advise to use the exact same wording for skills as in the job description ("Vizualized data" for one job and "Data vizualization skills" for another). BUT then also to word it as to how exactly the candidate used those skills at their previous jobs. How on earth does one actually do that? It's non-sensical.

The problem with HR is they dont know anything about technical skills. They dont know that understanding a more complicated computer language is better experience then having specific knowledge about a less complicated language. Hiring managers could easily make this distinction.

I find that matching the resume to the JD is like cheating. I get that there are a lot of irrelevant resumes that come through job postings, but as a recruiter, it's my job to filter that out. ATS is good for parsing resumes and building databases. But beyond that, I believe that the recruiter needs to put in the effort. It takes just about 5 seconds to see if you want to read the full resume or not. (for context - I am a recruiter).

You didn’t say anything about what do we do if we don’t have the relevant experience to the certain position. People who want to start from scratch can’t pass an ats system even if they wrote everything from the job ad.

Thank you! Nice job explaining and breaking it down for those who might not understand how the ATS works.

Ooh men. Absolutely loved how you jump straight to the point no corners and random stuff. Thanks

Careful. You're going to make recruiters mad. "The ATS doesn't reject jobs".

I have a question, in my field, I'm very experienced and qualified. I have the degree, the hard and soft skills, work experience, and have collaborated on many projects. I also know the jargon/language used in my field, so why would I get an automated email saying that I don't have the experience, or they found another candidate?
