How to understand before and after in linear arrangements

Doubt (I don't know if this will make sense but if anyone knows): In circular arrangement questions, sometimes in the same question one of the conditions will be phrased with the words 'to the immediate right/left' and another condition will be phrased with 'to the right/left'. Is the meaning still the same (that it is always to the immediate right or left)?
