Damn. Thats so honorable to hear the creator not only asked, but PAID him.
Companies now will NEVER ask permission and pay NO ONE

Hard to believe that the Popeye cartoons that I watched as a child growing up in Central Africa are nearly 100 years old! Got me hooked on spinach from a young age too.

Wow Popeye was based on a real person. That is just amazing.

I read how Popeye was inspired by an actual person once, I think I also read in that essay how Frank claimed he didn't really want fame, but it's good he is remembered

I grew up watching Popeye. And it’s only now I learned it was based on a real person

In the early days of Nickelodeon, they played reruns of Popeye. Unironically the reason why I ate my spinach as a little kid was because of that show.

There is a Popeye statue near the Chester bridge that crosses the Mississippi river. There is a tradition at Menards Correctional Center when two officers want to fight they meet at the Popeye statue after shift. I and several of my relatives worked at Menard CC and know this is a fact.

That just makes me love the character even more. Side note, don't mess with men called Rocky. It isn't going to end well for you.😊

I had an uncle that really looked like Popeye. He took advantage of his looks and would smoke a corn cob pipe at parties.

Wow, he lived a long life for that era and his rough life style. Very cool.

Spinach growers around the world owe that cartoon at least 10% of their profit. They'd have to pay with cartoon money, of course. Watching Popeye kick Bluto's butt after scoffing down a can of spinach (and not *until* he'd scoffed down that spinach) convinced me, as a 5 yr old who's always been on the smallish side, and was looking for any advantage I could get. My mother used to tell me she couldn't believe how, once she'd opened a can, I'd "stick your little fist into that can, and eat the whole thing!" (as she'd tell me). I was "strong to the finish, 'cause I eats me spinach, I'm Popeye the Sailor Man" (toot toot).

This cartoon is what made me eat my spinach at dinner. I hated spinach, but my dad was like dont you want to be as strong as Popeye.

Since I was little, my favorite Popeye cartoons were the old Max Fleischer b/w cartoons with the run-down, gritty backgrounds. One of the cartoons I laughed at the most was "Shiver Me Timbers", when Popeye, Olive Oyl and Wimpy visit a ghost ship.
