Maybe one of the most gifted conductors ever... I had the opportunity to see his performance with the LAPhil in Cologne, Germany, and it was just amazing his energy during the pieces. It's moving and vibrant. Unforgettable.

There is a visceral quality to maestro dudamel's music. I heard him, on DVD, do Beethoven's Marche Funebre. It just kicks me in the gut as if you are burying your child. It just had me in tears. I just don't know how he does it.

And I do.

@Mahler1912 Dudamel is like a drug to us music addicts. It sells itself.

Now this is a Mahler 6 interpretation to be satisfied with. Digging into the chromaticism, atonal qualities, orchestral thrust, and Mahlers' overall symphonic intent. They capture the march theme beautifully.

Saw Dudamel and the LAPhil Harmonic perform this in the Disney Concert Hall here in L.A. less than a year ago when I was 17 with my brother whom invited me. This was the first, but after that certainly won't be the last concert I attend.

@kongming819 At the moment, no, but Gothenburg Symphony is about to release several concerts at Deutsche Grammophon, so maybe this will be one of them in the future.

@hiyetty No, he never does, almost. He got the whole score in his head (and body)!

@jSlipkNoTj It is President Chavez and the Bolivarian Revolution that makes the Simon Bolvar Youth Orchestra what it is. Its the special sound of hope and dignity of the Revolution that never occured before Chavez. Plain and simple its anti-neoliberal in essance.

@kupo150 I see. You are speaking as a professional photographer. I suspect the reason the camera person focused on Gustavo and the first violin might be because Dudamel is hugely popular. This is just my guess. I am a fan of Dudamel. It's interesting to hear your feedback. I am an amateur photographer myself so it's always good to learn new things.

Since Gustavus Adolfus Dudamel (it really is his real name) has taken over the helm of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, has its sound changed from the previous conductor.
In two years, Dudamel has changed the sound the the LA Phil. No one is complaining, with the exception that you cannot get tickets and it cost too much.
Please come to San Francisco with Dudamel.

I agree with this comment. A look at other performances on video under Dudamel's conducting shows how carefully he parses the instrumentation and maintains the balance of and tension within the piece; to do this he gets great support from his players. But he will have his work cut out for him with this orchestra.

@Nationalorkestern Correct me if I am wrong, but I think all conductors must know the score by heart and when they have the score in front of them, they are not depending on it. Same goes for all members of the orchestra perhaps to a lesser degree. I think Gustavo is top notch so am not undermining him by saying this.

@hiyetty This isn't a big deal. Most conductors don't use scores, these days. If it's a new work, then the conductor might have it in front of him. It's not unusual for conductors to have astonishing memories, to know hundreds of works by heart. 120 years ago, when Arthur Nikisch was (probably) the first conductor to conduct from memory, they thought it was a show-off stunt. For him, it was just a matter of practically - he didn't need the score. Now, it's pretty standard - for pianists, too.

I thought for a second there, Dudamel actually believed he was creating the sound.

@b286guy I noticed that too. I think Dudamel was just late on his cue because the trumpets came in right on time.
