The Panzerkampfwagen III (also PzKpfw III or Panzer III) was a medium German tank in World War II. Intended as a standard model for future armored divisions, it was equipped with an armor-piercing gun for anti-tank combat, while the similar-built Panzer IV was intended to serve as a support vehicle. The Daimler-Benz-developed Panzer III, which was the main German armored fighting vehicle in 1941 and 1942, performed well in the first half of the war, but thereafter its combat value declined rapidly with the appearance of more powerful enemy tanks due to its limited upgrade capability. From 1936 to 1943, 5700 examples were produced, with the chassis serving as the basis for the much more successful Sturmgeschütz III until the end of the war.
Ausführung L: The vehicles initially produced with the long 5-cm gun from the end of December 1941 as "Version J" were redesignated "Version L" in March/April 1942. By October 1942, 1470 vehicles had been produced, this includes the "Ausführung J" produced with long gun. MG ammunition was almost doubled from 2000 rounds to 3750 rounds. The armor of the turret front was reinforced to 57 mm. For the purpose of further reinforcement, 20 mm of spacer armor was added to the hull front and gun front, so that the turret front was now almost 80 mm thick. The emergency exits attached to the side of the hull were partially omitted. On a few models, a 5-cm gun with a conical barrel was installed on an experimental basis. Due to the high wear and tear on the barrel, however, this powerful weapon was not used in the future.

The hinged arm on the roof can be released by removing that L-bar on a chain. The arm then swings down and can be connected to the gun shield to hold the main gun fixed in the horizontal position.

The roof lamp has a shutter to control its brightness.

At upper left there is a small round port in the roof. You can shoot flares through it.

On the wall above the telescope, to the right, there is a flat metal box. This contains two 6-volt batteries in series. It is the backup firing battery for when the tank's main batteries fail. Immediately to its left, obscured by the telescope support, is the switch for main/backup battery selection.

The clock-like device shows how the turret is pointing relative to the hull. It is backlit. To its right, the large black handwheel elevates the gun.

The small round silver thing to the right of the handwheel is the dial at the back of the open-sight bar. It's an alternative to the telescope, and you have to open a small port on the turret front to use it. It's useful in desperate close-combat situations because the main telescope has a narrow field of view. Nevertheless it is a proper ranging instrument that can be calibrated.

Closer to us, partially obscuring that dial, is a little box containing a lamp that lights up when you close the firing trigger. It's useful for figuring out why the gun doesn't fire.

The gunner is using the main telescope, which is monocular (left eye only).
