According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is by far the most common type of cancer. In fact, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. Our skin has many functions such as protecting our bodies from harmful substances, regulating body temperature, and it allows us to have a sense of touch. Skin cancer develops when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, and most often develops on skin exposed to the sun. Tune in as Dr. Sarah Weiss, medical oncologist and the Director, Melanoma/Cutaneous Oncology Program at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, walks us through the different types of skin cancer, latest treatment options and the importance of prevention.
