My 4 year old nephew learns tons of words from TV shows!! He knows lots of shapes, even hexagons and crescents, just from watching UmiZoomi. He identifies them in the real world, all on his own. And I learned lots of Spanish as a kid from Dora. I even learned from pure entertainment, non-educational shows like Fairly Odd Parents. (I remember specific examples. Tonsillectomy, powder room...)
I think personal interaction increases vocabulary faster. But that is not to say that kids don't learn from TV shows.
