AbeBooks' video review of The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

The Sun Also Rises was Ernest Hemingway's first major novel, and immediately established the author as one of the great prose stylists, and one of the preeminent writers of his time. It is also the book that encapsulates the angst of the post-World War I generation, known as the Lost Generation. This poignantly beautiful story of a group of American and English expatriates in Paris on an excursion to Spain's Pamplona and the running of the bulls represents a dramatic step forward for Hemingway's evolving style.

Thank you so much for this video. This is a nice concise summary of The Sun Also Rises, and is just the boost I needed to start writing a brief presentation I have to complete on the book.

This review is so old, yet I need to comment. I have just finished the book and did not appreciate it as a good example of great English literature. I do want the descriptions and the metaphors, I want grand seeping prose, I want deep characters that I care for. I will never consider this point style as good literature, it is not for me. This is a play, a short elementary letter home from summer camp--its weak, stilted and boring. There are so many other great examples of great American literature--this does not provide any hope for the novel . I refuse to look deeper into the plot for symbolism--there is none. Hemingway is having fun with us. he is reporting not writing a novel.
