Can a whole universe fit inside a black hole? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Paul Mecurio explore grand unification theory, black holes, the collapse of the wave function, and other problems in physics with theoretical physicist and author of Existential Physics: A Scientist’s Guide to Life’s Biggest Questions, Sabine Hossenfelder.

Should science yield elegant answers? We discuss the halt in progress in foundational physics and the science community’s obsession with symmetry. What do you do when your life’s work turns out to be wrong? We dive into patron questions like: what do we gain by taking more detailed measurements of the cosmic microwave background? Learn about the B-mode and dark matter research.

Does our consciousness collapse the wave function? Find out about the observer effect in quantum mechanics. Does quantum mechanics play a role in consciousness? Does time exist within a black hole? We explore whether wormholes are one-way, and who could possibly be inside of a black hole. What’s the difference between proper time and coordinate time?

Are there other universes inside black holes? Discover the shape of the multiverse and cosmological natural selection. Could it be that the most successful universes have the most black holes? When is it time to give up on an idea? What is dark matter? Is it a particle or is it modified gravity? What would be the best way for the universe to be destroyed? All that, plus, could the Big Bang be the result of another universe getting extruded through a black hole?

What's a question you're hoping physics can answer?

Sabine is one of the most fearless and honest physicists. She's not afraid to question the basis of many theories and has made some amazing videos on her channel speaking about myths surrounding over hyped topics like Quantum computing, fusion etc. A huge fan of her.

Wow. Sabine is on a roll?
A debate with her and Michio about the multiverse was posted by IAI the same day.
She is one of my favorite modern physicists.
Great questions for her as well. Some of which I'd have asked myself.
I'm always down to watch her speak with other physicists, given how critical minded she is.

How can you go wrong with Neil and Sabine, she, like Neil has the ability to make complex science so easy to understand. ❤️

I love Sabine! I cannot recommend her science channel to enough people, and her newest book has been impossible for me to stop thinking about it!

Sabine seems to be a voice of reason among her fellows. Essentially the old statement "your math may be right, but your numbers might be wrong" situation going on in physics.

Sabine has debunked for me so many myths I took as fact. She gave me so much peace of mind because those myths really bothered me.

So amazing to see Sabina here.
Two of my favorite physics YouTube educators together ❤

I love the different approaches to explaining physics of Mr. Tyson and Ms. Hossenfelder. I have been a fan of both for years.

Wow what a nice surprise! A long follower of Sabine's channel and work. I didn't read the description beforehand, and the buildup of Sabine's greeting.
Niel, thank you for having Sabine and your time.

Sabine, was great to see you and Niel in an excellent discussion area! Thank you for your work!

Lol I had no idea when I clicked that Sabine was the guest. Been following her for years she’s a great science communicator. Also not a bad singer

I love how graciously Sabine deals with two guys talking over her incessantly.

Nice one. Interesting people that actually know something and take the time to let us take part in their exchange. Appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

One suggestion: may be it would have been less stressful to watch if the gentlemen would have let her complete her answers instead of plain interrupting several times.

I haven't watched the video yet but I need to comment out of excitement because I have followed both StarTalk and Sabine's channels for so long and this is a crossover I never even thought Thank you!!!

I've read Sabine's books Lost in Math & Existential Physics and find her no nonsense take on Physics and the way the Physics community works so refreshing. She is brutally honest and doesn't pull her punches at all. I really like this woman. I find physics fascinating and was happy to see her on Star Talk. Great talk

Literally my two favorite YouTube hosts. I've been wondering if they would ever do an episode together.

Dag, Man - I've become so obsessed with Black Holes lately, kind of like I was only with tornadoes for a lot of years. I had kind of written off black holes as one of those things that I would never be able to understand - but the more I learn about them (and the more I find out what we DON'T know about them), the more fascinated I become. They're so tantalizing!! So incredible, so thought-provoking, and so awe-inspiring.
