The damage from an atomic bomb is amplified by the complex interactions between the heat rays, radiation, and blast. The blast kills people close to ground zero, and causes injuries further away, including lung injuries, ear damage, and internal bleeding. The extreme heat can vaporize almost everything close to ground zero, and cause severe burns and fires that can merge into a giant firestorm. Even people in underground shelters are likely to die from a lack of oxygen and carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Manhattan Project developed the first atomic bomb during World War II. The project was named after Columbia University, where much of the early research was done.
