The TRUTH About Piezoelectricity in Quartz Crystals

The full documentary showcases our beloved quartz crystal, and the process it underwent to use its piezoelectric properties during WW2, while peaking into the past showing "advances" in technology of the day, using natural resources for military communication during the war.

Some of the current public pay-to-dig mines in Arkansas fell under federal control during this period to harvest quartz to make radio oscillators during the war. The Blocker Lead No. 4 Quartz Mine, now known as the Old Coleman Mine in Jessieville (Garland County), Arkansas was one of them. The Willis Mine in Saline County played a huge role in production during this time as well.

The movie also has an awesome nostalgic Rosie the Riveter feel to it as you see many women in the workplace "dressed to the nines" as women were often required to do in this era. Many factories required women to wear skirts/dresses and stockings until the late 1960s.

The movie was made by Reeves Sound Laboratories in 1943 and is provided via the Prelinger Archives.

Most piezo crystals make very little power or sound. A large crystal may work better in a crystal set with a 130ohm coil.
