The Sunday before Easter, occurring in March or April each year, holds the anniversary of several major tornado outbreaks, in 1920, 1936, 1965 and 1994.

The most infamous event was the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak. That series of storms hit the Midwest on April 11 and was the nation's second-largest tornado outbreak at the time.

It spawned 55 tornadoes that killed 266 people over a 16-hour period. Incredibly, when broken down by strength, more confirmed tornadoes were F4 than any other strength, all with winds over 207 mph.

On Palm Sunday, April 11, 1965, Indiana was one of six Midwest states to be raked by deadly tornadoes. In all, 47 tornadoes killed 271 people and injured over 1, 500. This was the fourth deadliest tornado outbreak in U.S. history and the deadliest of all Indiana outbreaks. I'm from Lebanon, Indiana and this was 4 years before my time. But one of my uncles helped clean up the aftermath. He said he picked up cattle, pigs, other animals that we're just torn apart. He said he seen pieces of straw from farms and such that looked like they were driven into a tree like a nail. Must have been a horrible sight to see. I can't even imagine.
