Being Brazilian in the US has made me realize how difficult it is to describe race in Brazil. White privilege is definitely a thing, but most people aren't really all white. Racism is definitely a thing, but many people can both do racist things and be victims of racism themselves. And even the most accepting people who are brown have a difficult time not identifying as 'white'.

When we fill out the 'race' sections of forms here in the US, there really isn't a check box for us. We aren't hispanic, or asian. Most people will check off 'white', like my brown sister. And that's difficult to discuss. It honestly broke my heart when I saw sadness in her eyes after I started to dispute it with her, which stopped me in my tracks. I didn't think it would upset her.

Ethnicity is a whole other story. Does ethnicity even exist in Brazil anymore? We are diverse like the US, but we mix a lot more. And when I say we mix, I really mean that we mix. It's like we are all part of the same ethnicity. Does anyone else agree?
