Living with GrapheneOS, One Year Later!

A year ago, I made a video talking about my experience with using GrapheneOS for a month. That video became extremely popular, so I wanted to follow it up by talking about what it's been like to use for the past year. This video focuses on new features, bugs that I've encountered and requests I have for the future.

Also yes, I'm back! This time for real. I've been taking a nice break for the last 3 months but now it's time to get back to work.

2:20 btw safetynet was deprecated, and play integrity was introduced, so google pay doesnt even work on custom roms nowadays without proper fixing - google breaks it every one or two months

basically you are not alone

Just to be clear to those reading the comments: The GrapheneOS Updater automatically downloads and installs updates (to the second install slot of the device). You have to manually press 'Reboot now' for the update to finish installing. This means that the Updater isn't going to automatically reboot and so doesn't disrupt your usage. You can manually enable the Updater to auto-reboot if you want.

A lot of protesters and journalists in Europe use graphene OS. I might switch over one day but i don't feel important enough to justify trading convenience for privacy. Im glad projects like this exist though.

I wish Google added Wallet functionality especially considering just how much the GrapheneOS team added to mainline.

The neat thing about Graphene is if you have a problem, you can chat with the devs on their Matrix channel and they'll find a solution for you.

You can, in LineageOS 21, limit the battery to your preffered state, for me 80% works well, but you can set it between 70-100 limit. I am running it on a Moto G32 so your mileage may vary but for those who don't have a Pixel, Lineage is a solid choice. Been running Cyanogenmod before, now lineage, for years, no problems

The multi-tasking button is probably not working because of the physical damage to your phone or screen protector. Could be a coincidence, but I had the same problem happen at about the same time mine got damaged. (I am not using GraphineOS)

I've been using the Pixel 4XL with GOS for 3 years and no complains so far, I expect to update next year because my phone is out of extended support since last year.

There is a way to schedule system updates (kind of). Change your permitted networks to unmetered only and it will only update when you are on a home or office wifi network.

The hard part is commiting yourself to the app profiles. Originally I made one for both Discord, and Revanced both of which now sit on my default profile.

Just in case no one said it, from what ive seen, the multitasking button breaking is an Android 14 & any custom launcher issue. On my P8P i have to disable/stop the Pixel Launcher for the multitasking button to start working again if I'm using Nova Launcher or Niagara Launcher. No issues if I'm using the default Pixel Launcher, though

It's a known issue for custom launchers on Android and has been confirmed by Nova support that its an Android issue. I just gave up on 3 button nav and switched to gestures because it was a hassle and I want the custom launchers. Its been around for a while and I guess Google doesnt care enough to fix it

hi, currently using an iPhone 11 pro max but i really want more privacy and control over my device especially apps tracking what i or anyone does, ive been thinking about grabbing an 8 on sale or second hand and using grapheneos, do you think id benefit from doing this? And i say 8 since the very long support.

Multitasker button doesn't always work reliably on my Pixel 7a running the stock ROM with Nova Launcher. So, not likely a GrapheneOS issue

What about replacing the screen protector? It’s so ugly to see!

I have a Google Pixel 8 with stock Android and my home button would also stop working randomly so I don't think its an issue eith Graphene OS but Andorid itself and so far you're the only person I've come across who's experienced the same, I'm hoping Android 15 fixes it (unless I do decide to switch to Graphene OS lol)

Devices in extended support should get all the latest Graphene changes compared to the releases for fully supported devices. Only exception to that is device specific functionality like the USB Port control feature being exclusive to 6th gen Pixels and newer.

The Updater interface and functionality looks the same on my Pixel 8 compared to your Pixel 5 shown in video.
