Always good to hear Richter's first appearances in US.

He is the most organically powerful musician I have ever heard. (I have been listening to him for 57 years.)
Or maybe not. (There is a feROCIOUS will at work, as well. Paradox there, but Richter don't care, he don't.)
He is a piece of sculpture granted infinite fluidity by a lava-like core.
The velocity is ridiculous and at times anti-musical.
But the command of forward motion, of emotional certainty, of technical command ... you can't beat them. What captures me, above all, are the rhythm, and the tone so deep that it invites afternoon swimmers. I still get, less now than perhaps at the beginning, the feeling (if you will permit a fevered self-indulgence) of something larger than a personality animating the outflow of music.
Beneath the technical command, there is a sincerity and simplicity and groundedness that impart a sense of excellence almost of a moral kind.
He was just one of those who had greatness like others had height. Take it or leave it. But don't think to argue..
And then, of course, always improving, we stopped talking about greatness.

Am I the only one to hear the orchestra?

would have liked to hear the number 3 especially if it's the one with creaks you can hear in the recording...
