Poking the dragon in the eye is never an intelligent thing to do. But this week, backed by the United States' ironclad guarantee for security, the Philippines began to assert its sovereignty in the South China Sea by placing buoys in the waters. It claims to be its own. Not only this, on the 17th May, the Philippine military chief also visited the remote islands near the disputed separately archipelago insisting that it was important for the Philippines to monitor and detect who had access to the waters in the territory. The United States claims it is expanding its military foot print in the Philippines to better defend Taiwan in case of a conflict. But by doing what it has done has Washington pushed the Philippines to the forefront of a firing range as and when hostilities break out with China in the region? As a Filipino, the word "using" should no be used cause our country is constantly being harassed by China. During Duterte administration in 6 years our government sided with China but nothing happened. It still didn't respect our sovereignty, now our present administration we are very much happy to see that our friend US is here with us and if anything happen they will help us, infact this is not their problem, this is our problem, they just have an obligation to the Philippines... We do not seek war cause war is not good for any country, but we do not want any country just keep on disrespecting our sovereign rights, but we will stand and defend this country, defending our country is not new to us Filipino's...

Well it has been China's consistent efforts in bullying that made the Philippines restore its close military ties with the US. Previous Duterte admin had tried to distance the Philippines from the US military even to the point of abrogating the Visiting Forces Agreement and had sincerely reached out to China with diplomacy over the years but Chinese Navy never stops the bullying. Despite the Philippines making numerous diplomatic protests, China never stop. NO CHOICE but to make the military alliance with US much stronger than ever, and possibly make more military alliances with Japan and South Korea, because it was difficult to deal with the CCP.

As a result, the United States, being the treaty ally of the Philippines, will be the force to face them.

In July 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague issued its ruling on a claim brought against China by the Philippines under UNCLOS, ruling in favor of the Philippines on almost every count. While China is a signatory to the treaty, which established the tribunal, it refuses to accept the court’s authority. Since 2014, China has built 10 artificial island bases, including one at Mischief Reef, deep inside the Philippines' own exclusive economic zone or EEZ. The CCP (chinese government) leaders have a ‘Might Makes Right’ mindset, so power is the ultimate and only source of legitimacy, when it comes to international affairs.

China is a one of the most powerful nation via it's economy, population and military . They just do whatever they like in SCS despite others claimants. ASEAN countries are mostly affected by this bullying and it's right for the Philippines to ally themselves with the US to balanced the conflicts in SCS. If there was no China intrusions in SCS in the first place, I think all this tension does not happen.
