Russia and Ukraine have exchanged hundreds of prisoners of war in a deal brokered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Russian defence ministry said it had swapped 150 Ukrainian soldiers held captive for an equal number of Russian troops.

So does this mean they’re close to a peace deal.

To see those men, so thin, so exhausted, but still patriotic and still fighting, it never stops making me ashamed that here in the States we elected a President who is on record saying that men who get captured in war are not heroic men. DJT is a shame on my country and a shame on the human race.

Why is the Ukraine conflict different from all others it is surely the norm that captured soldiers are only freed if liberated or peace declared. I can remember doing something similar when young playing around the local area.

Russia broke peace in 2014, and never proposed to restore it, so there is nothing to negotiate except POW exchanges.

The Russian regime is harsh on regime critics. Former inmates interviewed by the media described the harshness of the prison where Nawarinuy, a known critic of the regime, was held in December 2023. He described the unbearable cold, uncomfortable food, unsanitary conditions, and violence by guards at the prison in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the Arctic Circle to which he was transferred.
According to the testimony, the cell in which Nawarinui was believed to have been held was particularly harsh. Nawarinui died in prison two months after being admitted, at the age of 47. A former inmate who identified himself as Konstantin, who had spent time in solitary confinement at the prison, said he was “completely broken. He said he still shudders when he thinks of that camp, and that he has suffered from severe mental illness since his release.

Ukraine needs victory, not negotiations with Russia, which has broken all previous agreements.
