There are many things to do after your sunflower emerge to ensure you have a good stand and are maximizing your yield potential. In this video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Larry Lunder shares some tips for early season optimizations to ensure your sunflowers are healthy, and that you’re maximizing your yield potential. Larry recommends taking a stand count, and shows you how to depending on your row width. If you see uneven emergence, you’ll want to dig up some seeds or plants to determine why you have gaps, whether you have disease or insect pressure, poor planter performance, or a different reason. Scouting for pests and weed pressure during this time is also important to keep your field clean through the season. Weed control is especially important, since there are fewer options for weed control in sunflowers. Larry recommends using preemergence products that are formulated to control for your specific weeds in your area.
