you guys do realize you can buy the s&p500 from anywhere in the world right? From the comments it looks like you can do it only if you live in the us..

I'm surprised he did not mention Germany?

He has/had a point: the US is about the only economy and market in the world that is big enough, self-sustaining and well-regulated enough to risk concentration in. Plus major American businesses export a lot. That being said the major growth in the next decades will be in the emerging markets and the US equity markets are at all time highs now. For this reason the returns for US equity will be a lot less than what it used to be. Ironically his own company Vanguard has international index funds and ETF's.

He missed Germany. And Australia. And Taiwan. And South Korea. Lots of stable innovative hard working countries there.

I only have 10% invested outside the US, 5% in emerging markets and 5% in developed markets, just to say I have something out there, but domestic equities have a far better outlook and have outperformed foreign stocks by a mile in the last 10 years.

Britain has an unusual electoral system. As opposed to the US I am assuming. That aged well. I am considering my own portfolio as we speak as the 2024 elections are 6 months away in the US and what it will mean for American democracy, and therefore global stability.

The US economy does not just have to do better (this is reflected in the much higher prices of US stocks) in order to justify restricting yourself to the US, it has to do better than expected.

What a great man! He not only understood how the money/economy/market works and should work for the average person/ he was also educated and so well read widely.

Hes a fantastic investor and has changed the world but I feel like he may be a bit short sighted in this clip. I mean yes, the US has some of the most stable and advanced institutions and companies in the world, but he ignores the role of emerging markets and the strength of other nations.

So, is he saying to investing "20%" though? Hard to hear at the end.

i agree with what he said about all the countries but I think he missed India whose baseline index (NIFTY 50) has out performed the SPY by 8% since inception of the index.

Makes perfect sense to me. International markets can't be equally trusted like US markets.

haha love how candid he is, slightly biased. In all fairness he has the right to be and it is not totally unwarranted. I'm British and have more confidence in the future of America than my own country.

Just like mega cap stocks, the US is not too large to fail.

What about Euronext? It has a larger market cap than the LSE...

Why did they come up with a Vanguard international fund now?

If Im a european investor that want to buy an american index fund or common stocks (Us) would it be a problem the currency risk ? Or maybe in the long run it’s not gonna be a huge thing.
