Just moved to Generic medicine from last few months for my mother. Almost saved 80% and my mother is not feeling any adverse effect. I completely agree with you brother!

Dr. Here, the problem with generics is not safety, rather less effective. By quality of medicine we mean whether a generic drug will have the same amount of effect on the patient as compared to branded drugs which have shown efficacy for several years. Yes there are deals made between docs and companies, but those are the bad apples among the many docs who practice with integrity. Next time if a doc prescribes you a branded drug, you can ask them to give a cheaper branded drug & no doctor will say no to your request. The problem is quality checks are not made on companies manufacturing generic drugs hence we doctors put the patients well being and recovery over the cost of the medicine. A healthy discussion with your doctor is recommended over simply accusing doctors of deals.

I bought a three month stock of medicine for my maid's mother who is a heart patient but after careful research and replacing almost the whole prescription with generic medicine.
Don't worry I cross referenced it with the doctor and he approved it too.
Shockingly the cost tumbled from 9k to less than 3.5k. The difference is almost what I pay my maid monthly.

Being an ex-medical representative, I know the marketing strategy with the doctors. I left that job 5 years back because of these kind of unethical practices. I completely agree with all of your points brother.

Superb video! I too work in a pharmaceutical company and the industry is indeed quite messed up in terms of getting the Dr to write our brand. It's admirable that you have shed light on such an important issue.

What I have understood after so many discussions with the doctors and even after trying generic is, yes we should go with generic medicines but finding the correct one is the challenge, so the best way is to go for brand generic, it gives the surety of the quality and at the same time cheap as well, so this is kind of a sweet spot.

I believe there's a significant issue in India regarding this matter. During my internship in the US, I noticed that the majority of prescribed medicines were generic. When you visit a pharmacy to purchase them, they inquire if you prefer generic or branded options. I was also involved with a charitable hospital where all medicines were provided free of cost. This experience was enlightening because I didn't have to memorize various brand names. As for effectiveness, I believe the FDA in the US is doing an excellent job in maintaining quality standards. I wish India had a similar system in place. While there are regulatory bodies in India, sometimes their rules and regulations can be cumbersome and challenging to navigate.

Last year my mother in law got admitted in a hospital. She was given 2 injection meropenem and fosfomycin daily.
According to the hospital policy, all medicine are charged at mrp only. So, both injections were getting charged at mrp only daily cost of which comes to around 9000. One was marked at 3085 and the other one around 6000.
It was getting difficult for us to maintain such daily expenses. The doctor in a good will asked us to get discharged and take these injection at home via private nurses.
We did so. I went to one of my friends who owns a chemist shop.
I was shocked to see that the 3000 priced medicine was provided by him for around 300 and the 6000 one for 900..!!!! and that too of a good reputed company.

As a pharmacist, it is impossible to sell generic drugs in India, because, 90% of medical shops in India are run without pharmacists, , , pharmacists rent their registration to that pharmacy shop, and most of the people who sit in medical shops do not have basic idea about the MOA of these medicines. They only know the brand names of drugs and their uses, ,
And it is more harmful for a patient

Is there anything changed regarding generic medicines? I can answer this question. "Yes there are alot of changes and Modi bought that change and that came in form of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana". How? "previous my mom was paying 1500 montly for her hypertension now she pays only 200-250 for the same, ", the store is opened near my house, it is a great relief for our household.

i'm doing exactly this since long ...whenever i fell sick or had any health issues my different doctors prescribed me branded medicines but i checked their salt composition and searched online for different brands which are of good quality and available cheaply either on app or in chemist shop and bought it ..never i had any issues with quality..i must have saved almost 90% because of generic medicine..just to give an example i suffer from Allergy and doctor prescribed me a specific anti allergy branded medicine which was costing 350 rs for 10 tablets same composition medicine cost me 50 rs at jan aushadhi kendra which i purchased hence i never had any issues in spending money on medicine..i literally saved 300 Rs because of generic medicine which i bought at jan aushadhi kendra..this was possible only because i was well aware of generic medicine but many still don't buy it unfortunately because of lack of awareness or people still fear to eat generic medicine because they think it lacks quality

I was reading about this issue, one thing generics need rigorously is the bio-similar equivalence of the branded drug. At times generics are ineffective as they are not matching the effectiveness of a branded drug.
