Muay Thai Clinch in a Street Fight (Experiment & Tutorial)

So I was wondering how a non-trained fighter would react to the Muay Thai clinch. I asked my friend to put on gloves and try to escape, get in better position, or hurt me in any way possible. Watch as I secure the full dominant clinch and he tries to fight his way out.

The Muay Thai clinch is pretty much standing grappling, with added knees and elbows. In clinch fighting, you must work to get a better, more dominant position so that you can control your opponent, set up knees, and even sweep them and take them down to the ground.

to people saying groin shots are the answer. have you been in a thai clinch before? its hard to defend a flurry of knees and elbows if your hands are touching someones nuts

I'm 5'10" and weigh 190lbs. I'm in great shape and train MT four or five times a week. About 11mo total experience. The pro's in my gym that weigh 160lbs but feel like a 300lb strongman when in the clinch against them. The clinch is so effective if you know what you're doing. My coaches said in Thailand a fighter with my experience, regardless of weight would be clinching with 12 and 13 year olds and I would get folded like a chair.

in a street fight, considering a lot of people's primal instinct is to defend, I think the clinch will work pretty well. I usually see that the  closer I get to my opponents the more they don't know what to do. If you shorten your distance to your opponent, his moves will be limited. With the clench, you got him under full control. Time to watch the next video!

If a bully gets you in a muay thai clinch and you don't have 5 bucks that you want to spend you are fucked lol.

One thing I've found is that the older style clinch has more control and offensive options, especially against multiple opponents. Experienced fighters might call it a modified "single collar tie" clinch. It's one-handed and uses the middle and ring fingers to control the back of the neck. The difference though is that the forearm bone drives against your adversary's clavicle. It holds the guy off balance and allows you to spin him, creating a shield against other assailants, or lets you throw him. Also your other arm is free and lets you multiply your offensive options beyond just a knee. It seems unintuitive but I've tried it on two different people and it works wonderfully.

Excellent demo. Most trainers don't "pop" moves on someone unexpectedly, rather they go on a spiel about it first and the guy just goes with the technique unconsciously. You showed the effectiveness of the clinch on an unexpecting adversary, like you may find in the street.

The clinch is the most dangerous weapon in thai boxing IMO, that's what sets it apart from other stand up martial arts... I clinch about 5 times a week with other fighters so you're never really gonna get a full plum on someone trained, that's more first month stuff but the average street guy, 😂they wouldn't last 10 seconds! Great video bro

The clinch and flying knees work well in a street fight. I have used it countless times

It was great being able to see how somebody who was untrained would react. Really gives you the chance to see what works in a street fight and what doesn't.

I'm very glad you mentioned to grab the crown of the head for the clinch. I've seen so many people make the mistake of grabbing the neck and no one correcting them for it.

Hey Shane I'm an amateur MMA Fighter (record 22 W 0 L) and you got some great stand-up fighting videos man. I owe a good amount of my success in the cage to my ground game. I think all your fans would love to see some videos on Wrestling and BJJ or just the "Ground Game" in general, just a suggestion though. Keep up the good work and videos man. You got my support. :)

i wouldn't recommend it in a street fight if your opponent carries a knife and gets panic because he can't get out from the clinch he will stab you in the ribs and puncture your lungs. and alot of people carries knifes these days

I liked how this video was set up differently than your others. You first showed truthfully how someone untrained would react in the situation, which is how most people would react on the street. Than you broke it down and said exactly what you should do like in your other videos. Most self defense videos don't actually show how someone would react to your attack because the person you're demonstrating with already knows whats going to happen or how to get out of it already.

Anyways, this was a very well done instructional video and I'm interested to see if you do something like this again in the future.

Nice work shane... i'm a muay thai practicer from brazil and i bet you help a lot of people with bully problems with your fights tips... good job! Shane let me ask you something, i also practice brazilian jiu-jitsu, and from my experiences on training MMA, i see that a fight almost always ends up on the ground, so you could teach people some ground defense, submissions, etc. Good job, keep up man
