Diabetes itself is an immunologically modulated disease. Usually the healing pattern in not only the bone, but the healing pattern of every wound is delayed especially the bone takes a long time to delay. There are two concepts in this delay in wound healing or the bone healing. One is increased sugars which acts as a difficulty in healing phenomena. Second is deficiency of vitamin D and calcium which is associated with diabetes. Usually a good sugar control where always we tell fasting less than 110 or post prandial or sugars after food should be less than 140 to 150. This is the ideal situation where there is no hyperglycaemia in the blood which augments the process of wound healing and bone healing, the second part of it is what is called as Vitamin deficiency. Vitamin deficiency plays a vital part in the absorption of calcium. So if vitamin D is deficient, calcium absorption is not there. When there is no adequate calcium, there is delayed wound healing. So there are 2 points to augment the process of bone healing, one is control your sugars and supplement with your vitamin D.
