Ancient Karthaia – Kea (Tzia) | Greece [4K]

Ancient Karthaia was one of the four ancient city-states on the island of Kea or Tzia in the Cyclades. It was located at the southeast end of the island, mentioned by Strabo and Pausanias. The city was continuously inhabited for 1300 years from the Geometric period (8th century BC) until Late Antiquity (6th century AD) when it was deserted. The ruins of the Acropolis, the fortifications and the center of the ancient city were preserved for many centuries on the hill of Aspri Vigla, Pindar describes it as a "narrow ring of land". The two valleys of Kalamitsi in the east and Vathypotamos in the west as well as the sea in the south created an excellent natural landscape, in which rare birds found refuge and many medicinal herbs grew.
