Israeli forces destroyed several residential buildings south of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, on Friday evening, asserting that the central headquarters of Hezbollah was underneath them.

The target of the strikes was Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, according to eight Israeli and two American officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence. It was not immediately clear whether Mr. Nasrallah was in the buildings when they were hit.

A security source told the Qatari newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that "the extent of the destruction in Dahieh is enormous. Lebanon has reinforced all ambulances and dispatched them to the scene."
