Exploring Apple Tree Surfboards with Foil Drive: A Comprehensive Test

Welcome back to another Appletree Tech Talk! Today, we're diving into an exciting experiment that's been on everyone's minds: testing Appletree surfboards in combination with Foil Drive. We've gathered a diverse crew of riders, from complete beginners to seasoned pros, to put various board shapes and sizes to the test. Let’s see which setups work best!

Meet the Crew
Dominic from Foil Drive Europe: An expert in foil driving, Dominic shares his knowledge and tests several boards with different foils.

Freddie: A beginner in Foil Drive, Freddie is eager to learn and tries out the equipment for the first time.

Jon Mann: Known for his downwind content, Jon tests the Foil Drive setup for the first time, bringing his extensive foiling experience to the table.

Testing Different Boards and Foils
Our goal is to determine the best board and foil combinations for different skill levels. Here’s a breakdown of the key moments and findings from our test day:

Dominic's Expertise:
Foil Setup: Spitfire 1180 from AXIS
Insights: Dominic highlights the importance of board size and shape. He finds the Skipper DW Prone board to offer unparalleled speed and glide, making it an excellent choice for advanced riders.

Freddie's Learning Journey:
Initial Setup: A large downwind board.
Progression: Freddie starts with a stable board and gradually moves to smaller sizes. She finds the Appleslice V3 (60 liters) particularly user-friendly due to its stability and ease of use, despite initial challenges with transitions.

Jon Mann's First Experience:
Foil Setup: Code 980S medium fuse 150 AR stab.
Findings: Jon notes the difficulties in maintaining speed and balance on narrower boards but eventually finds his stride. He praises the Skipper DW Prone board for its stability and ease of getting up on foil.

Board Comparisons
Through extensive Foil Drive testing, certain boards stood out:

Skipper DW Prone:
Pros: Exceptional speed, glide, and ease of getting up on foil.
Ideal For: Advanced riders looking to maximize performance with smaller foils.

Slice V3:
Pros: Stability and ease of use, making it an excellent choice for beginners.
Cons: Not as fast as the Skipper Downwind Prone.

Pro V (37 liters):
Pros: Loose and suited for big foils.
Cons: Challenging for even experienced riders due to its small size and specific hull shape.

Conclusion
Our test confirms that the Skipper Downwind Prone board is the top choice for advanced foilers due to its impressive speed and glide. For beginners, the Appleslice V3 offers a more stable and forgiving experience, making it easier to learn and progress. Extremely small boards like the Pro Foil V2 are best suited for very lightweight riders or those looking for a challenging ride.

Thanks to Dominic, Freddie, and Jon for their efforts and insights. We hope this guide helps you choose the best board and foil setup for your skill level and foiling aspirations. Stay tuned for more tech talks, and don’t forget to subscribe for the latest updates.

It would have been very helpfull to show the board on the screen that each rider is talking about, lots of room on the screen to the side to show the boards and even the board stats, length, width, volume etc. But great demo on foil drive with your boards. Larry

Guys, I have 2 Appletree boards. I'm 6'1, 88kgs. On flat water + Foil Drive Max: Stock Apple Skipper Prone - 4'6'' (34L) -> I can make it work all the way to a Spitfire 960 or an ART Pro 1121 (skinny 365 rear) / Appletree Majek - C@$H - Cash 4'3'' - 31L: I can make a Spitfire 1030 to work (or above). On the ocean, with a 1 foot bump: I can make any wing to work, on both Appletree boards, even a Spitfire 840 or smaller. Let me know if you have any questions. BTW, the Skipper Prone 4'6 34 Liters needs an Antenna to work properly.

Still don't get y u would ever want to go on your knees to get up? You have way less control on your knees when in a tripod position back foot then front foot with hands forward on board I've found you have way more control. Plus it's a lot faster getting up and more realistic to a surf pop up
