I had Chinese Geese for their egg laying, watchdog alarm, and protection from predators. They were impervious to weasels, opossums, and hawks, but not raccoons. My Welsh Harlequin Ducks were fantastic layers and foragers, not much meat on their bones, were very hardy, but lost one to a redtail hawk, and a couple initially to a coyote. Keeping them securely penned at night was essential to prevent coyote, 'coon, and great horned owl predation. The 2 lost initially to a coyote was in broad daylight midday. I have used 2 inch mesh, 2 foot tall poultry wire ($20 / 150 ft) as a fence with a hot wire 4" to 6" above that to keep the ducks in and furred predators out. Laying another length of poultry wire on the ground, centered under the fence, keeps the ducks from pushing under low spots and has kept coyotes out, though they could easily jump the fence. I'm guessing that the coyotes sense that the fence on the ground is some sort of steel trap or snare, as I see them periodically walking the fence line just beyond the mesh on the ground. Trying some Golden Cascade Ducks this year as they should be a good dual purpose breed without losing any of the egg laying capacity of the Welsh Harlequin Ducks.

Love your videos! We purchased our ducks( golden layer 300s) from metzer farms. Healthy, productive birds...quieter than Muscovy pure breeds, and very friendly. More eggs than you can handle some weeks. Love seeing your projects! Best!

Hey I've got a question if you know.. I keep 4 geese in a chestnut tree orchard and some told me that geese can hurt the trees. Is this true?
