The risk I see in self diagnosing is using the assumed disorder as a reason to give up or be like “this is just how I am” instead of trying to better ourselves. If you actually have ADHD or other disorders, the correct diagnosis can help explain why some things are harder than they are for neurotypical people. If you self diagnose and get it wrong, it can become a crutch when you just don’t want to do something as “well my ADHD brain just won’t let me” when you don’t have an ADHD brain at all.

I got close to self diagnosing anxiety a few years ago. Before that, I’d be overwhelmed but could take a deep breath and attempt to get through it. After the self diagnosis, I found myself saying “I have anxiety so there’s no way I can endure stress of any kind.” Once I accepted that the self diagnosis wasn’t accurate, it’s no longer a crutch for me.
