I've been swooped by four different barred owls, though none of them hit me. Apparently the young males are aggressively territorial in the autumn, and fluffy hair or poofy hats can set off their strike-instinct, like a young cat pouncing on a string. They're not imprinted on humans; they're not defending nests; they're not mistaking our hair for squirrels - they're just being territorial jerks, the same as feisty young roosters when they try to attack the back of your leg just because they can.

Was that on Notth Central Ave? That’s the street I grew up on… I graduated from Clayton High. That’s crazy! Owls can be treacherous but I never had this issue personally. ☮️
