NBA legend Magic Johnson delivers a speech at an event hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris in Flint, Michigan, on Friday. Originally from Lansing, Michigan, Johnson has been a vocal supporter of Harris, endorsing her candidacy and actively participating in various outreach coalitions such as 'Athletes for Harris' and 'Business Leaders for Harris'.
“I come from the middle class and I will never forget where I come from,” Harris tells the Flint crowd, pledging to support growth in cities like Flint and more “good union jobs,” including jobs “that do not require a college degree,” since a college degree is not the only measure of a worker’s skill or experience.
Harris added, as president, she will highlight which federal jobs do not require a college degree, and challenge the private sector to do the same.
Her visit to battleground Michigan, known by many as the birthplace of organized labor, comes a day after the International Longshoremen’s Association union and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, an association of companies that operate East and Gulf Coast ports, reached a tentative agreement to end a two-day strike.
Vice President Kamala Harris is traveling to Michigan for campaign rallies, while former President Donald Trump is in Georgia to receive a briefing on Hurricane Helene damage and then participates in a town hall in North Carolina. The candidates are racing to make their pitch to voters in key battleground states with less than five weeks until Election Day.
Harris is expected to meet with a group of Arab American and Muslim American leaders in Flint, Michigan, as conflict in the Middle East rages on.
